In the novel Elphaba is a darker and much more developed character who is in touch more with her inner demon. The story is very different than the musical adaptation of it, as the book is much darker and more evil and the musical is well- obviously very happy. In Wicked the musical, Elphaba is misunderstood, intelligent, but basically good. However, the book is quite different. Just don’t allow yourself to be heart broken if you happen to read the novel first and then don’t see the exact story played on stage when you go to see the musical. Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship is also different in the play and novel. Personally, I would prefer him to tone down the creepiness a bit and maybe have a happier ending. The musical and the book offer completely different experiences (because they were made with different intents and for different audiences) and I like them both, but if I have to pick one, I pick the book. I won’t ruin the surprise for you, but just be prepared to think, “what?” There is no right answer to whether you should see the musical or read the novel first.
I tend to like stories with a happy ending (in this case, it was a happy-ish ending) and so the musical was perfect.I do not feel as though the musical would be as successful as it is if it had followed exactly what happened in the book. Maguire kills off many characters in the book (to show just how much the government in Oz really fails to recognize its citizens, and to explain how horrible the living conditions were in Oz at that time) so it is kind of depressing, not to mention quite perverted. Right now I will be analyzing how the book, Wicked: Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and the musical Wicked are extremely different. 2. She is selfish, caring, careless, beautiful, and human, all of the very qualities that the Wizard of Oz and the musical as well left out.Both story lines are concerned with the Oz animals and the connections and revelations from the Wizard of Oz original. I can see both sides because both the novel and the Broadway musical are beautiful works of art that have both won many awards (so it is obvious that they are both quite impressive). I really recommend that you read the book as well as see the musical. A book musical strives for realism and integration. Wicked, the Broadway musical, is a spectacular and colorful yet at the same time dark show that will amaze and mesmerize you for two and a half hours. The musical's plot is completely different, but more appealing. Broadway definitely offers an airy and light, colorful musical version of a novel that is involved and dark. In Maguire’s novel, the character of Glinda is truly brought to life. You all should just go out and watch the musical What’s your opinion? His writing style is very creepy (as i have already explained multiple times) but he is such a great writer. The book was written by Gregory Maguire and published in 1996. Fantastic music is set to a captivating and thrilling cast of characters that a majority of Americans will probably never grow tired of.
