Most of all, it is a heartfelt story of a man who sought his father's love by taking on the vocation of priesthood in his father's place. With clean and introspective prose, Carroll seems to have told it as it is, and not how he wished for it to have been. Needless to say, their opposingI have never thought of myself as being overly interested in memoirs, but I actually liked this one. The family drama takes place as the nation goes through the great changes of the 1960's, and Carroll becomes ever more committed to opposing the Vietnam War -- the war his father is helping to direct.All of the agonizing issues of the 1960s -- Vietnam, the civil rights act, student activism, etc. One has the sense of public commentary (Latin chorus) versus private, more personal contemplation (English solos). Two thumbs way up.Hard to believe this is an autobiography. More than any other book I've read about the American war in Vietnam and the civic unrest of the Martin Luther King era, this book brought me to understand the personal impact of these events upon privileged white society. His father's high political office deepens the complexity of his struggle along with the pressures of being in the clergy.
American Requiem reminds us of the fact that we are often times complex reflections of those who came before us.

I'm not sure sons are constitutionally able to judge their own fathers in such a manner. Carroll left the priesthood to become a novelist and playwright. I kept reading sections out loud to Brian. The final chapters are wonderful. The entanglement of the Catholic church was eye-opening, though not surprising, at this point. Carroll writes of his joy and sorrow as a priest and his ultimate decision to leave the priesthood, and how every decision he makes seems irrevocably tangled in his father's history as well. I have to imagine it hurt to write this book; he holds his father responsible for the deaths of millions due to his involvement in Vietnam, Carroll believes his own father was part of a fascist plot (Carroll's words) to discredit Martin Luther King, Jr. A fascinating perspective, particularly now with Pope Francis' emphasis on social justice issues, but a bit marred for me by occasions where the author's descriptions of his emotions felt a bit overwrought or melodramatic. A true literary gem.Heartfelt, self-revealing, candid. But, the word "scrupulosity" comes to mind:You think you've got pressure from the family? Also a memoir of one kind of faith lost, and another held.
