A very well-written book that swings the reader along with James.Like watching a train wreck: You know what is probably going to happen at the end and you just can't look away. Then the novel goes about its proper and redeeming business of establishing a black perspective on the fiction of Southern life.

Lovely writing, excellent storytelling, sad times and story.Ernest J. Gaines was a novelist, short story writer, and teacher. It was excellent too. There were a lot of layers to this story, and it was beautifully written in an understated way.Not far into this book, it´s easy to tell that Marcus will be killed and his presence at the plantation will wreak havoc on its residents.
